Equipoise

The American Heritage ® dictionary defines Equipoise as "Equality in distribution, as of weight, relationship, or emotional forces; equilibrium."

Then there are the comments concerning the term found on page 48 in the January/February 2006 issue of Skeptical Inquirer.

David Koepsel, the executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism and assistant professor of philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo, writes:

"Equipoise means beginning one's research, investigation, or diagnosis without bias. Equipoise is essential so that the investigation can be pursued adequately, as bias can influence data acquisition. If an investigator begins acquiring data with an aim toward finding something in particular, then one is apt to discard some data, or misinterpret data, even potentially unconsciously, in order to confirm one's hypothesis. There are numerous historical examples of how lack of equipoise can influence data collection, and has done so sometimes disastrously."

I believe this comment is apropos to the Kennedy assassination. Almost annually, we are bombarded with claims of some new revelation. Sadly, in some cases, the misinterpreted data is presented consciously to deceive. Therefore it is better to carefully scrutinize video and books to determine if the "investigator [has acquired] data with an aim toward finding something in particular."
